Vintage Babe Ruth Quaker Puffed Wheat Cereal. Publicity Photo Circa 1930 or post 1930. This is a nice barn-type find.

This is a vintage and primitively framed photo of Babe Ruth featuring one of his many endorsements in his career. Here, he is promoting Quaker Puffed Wheat Cereal. Research finds that this photo was first taken in New York in January 1930 by photographer Mark Rucker.

Current photo credits found show: Photo by Mark Rucker/Transcendental Graphics, Getty Images. The frame measures 8 ¾ x 10 ¾. We do not know the exact size of this photo. The mat opening measures at 5x7.

Some minor surface wear exists on the photo itself including creases. The mat boarder area shows some toning and an unknown spot just above Ruth's head. The photo is placed behind this mat and thus we do not know its exact size. The photo is primitively framed with glass and with a newspaper backing - this is one of the ways it was done back then. The frame has not been disassembled but is showing signs of aging around where the glass and photo is as it is partially but not fully broken loose from the newspaper backing.

Nails were also used in the frame area on the back to secure the backing to the photo/glass. We found no exact date to the newspaper The paper appears to be from the Cleveland or Columbus, Ohio area. From researching out of the articles found on the backing speaking of the USS City of South Haven, we found that this carrier was built in 1903, served during WWI until it was decommissioned on 09/27/1919. Since the article speaks of military service, we conclude that this newspaper pre-dates the Ruth Photo and most likely dates to before 1919.

As such, someone could have used old newspaper they had to frame up this later photo. Since the frame has not been disassembled nor photo removed, we have no way of knowing or otherwise verifying whether this is a true Type I original or some later version.

However, we do not suspect this to be a Type I. But again this is inconclusive.
